I’ve tried everything I could think of to try to get pregnant. I have wanted a baby more than just about anything throughout my life and I’m excited to share with you what has finally worked for me. Please note: I’m not a medical professional. I am a regular person who is sharing my personal experience that may be something you can identify with.
I’ve tried a lot over the years and nothing has worked. I’ve even gone to the fertility clinic and was told that there really isn’t a reason why I’m not pregnant, but if I lose 10% of my weight I would surely be pregnant in 6 months. That was about 4 years ago. If you’d like to read more about this, Miracles Do Happen!, just click here.
My combination of improving my overall health, supplementing for nutritional gaps and health needs, tracking ovulation and prayer has helped me to achieve my goal of getting pregnant. It took 20 years to get here. Here’s my story:
Improved General Health
September 1, 2017 I started following the Ketogenic lifestyle. Holy moly was that a blessing. I was desperate to try just about anything to lose weight. Yes, I tried this to lose weight. Every single doctor told me to lose weight…as if it was so possible and easy to do!
I was worried that I would be hungry, hate the food I had to eat, had to spend money on garbage whatevers that are required, feel like a train wreck….and after suffering through all of that, I would fail like everything else.
Keto was so different! I got to eat normal, real food that tasted amazing. I wasn’t hungry or feeling terrible. Actually, I was full and felt amazing. And the best part…I lost weight. A lot of weight. And even better, the weight stayed off and it’s been over a year.
Keto isn’t for everyone. It’s a high fat, moderate protein, low carb way of eating that helps give your body the means to heal itself. It’s basically everything I had been needing and wanting for decades! If you want to know more about Keto, check out Keto Basics. It’s been the easiest and most satisfying year of my life. I have donated so many clothes that became too big and I am not at all worried that I will regain that weight.
Not only did I lose weight, but my nails and hair are stronger and healthier, my insulin resistance is almost nonexistant, my blood sugar is so steady and I am no longer pre-diabetic, my blood pressure is totally good, my hormones are like a normal person and not like I have PCOS at all, I rarely have migraines anymore, I am off metformin and lexapro, I sleep better, have regular cycles and can ovulate, and I just feel so much better.
The best part…I didn’t fail again!

I believe in taking good quality supplements to help fill nutritional gaps and meet the needs of my body to allow it to heal and repair itself as it should. After years of of neglect and doing the wrong thing (even when I thought it was right), I have health issues that need to be addressed and supported as I go through Keto. I have a long list of supplements I take to support my PCOS, anxiety, blood sugar, sinus infections, etc. But there is one special supplement that I tried specifically to help with ovulation, soy isoflavones.
I had read on blogs about women who tried soy isoflavones to force ovulation. I was leary as I’ve avoided soy for most of my adult life. Soy is an estrogen disruptor and I already have problems with hormone balancing…so avoiding it seemed like the right thing to do. I looked into this further and it did seem like something I could try with minimal issues. I ended up buying 50mg soy isoflavones from my local health food store and went home to prepare.
The idea is to take 60-100mg twice daily for 5 days during your cycle, days 3-7. I wanted to take the lowest dose for the first month. I mean, I was sure I couldn’t get pregnant because I still have so much weight to lose. I didn’t read the bottle correctly, as I later realized it said to take 5 pills for each dose. Oops.
I took 1 pill each morning and evening for 5 days. That came out to about 20% of the dose. But oh boy did it work! I totally felt ovulation last month. I had weird cramping like I’ve never felt before. It was like others had described in their posts online. Was it my imagination that I ovulated? Possibly…but now I’m pregnant, so it must have been ovulation that I felt.
This was the most annoying part of trying to get pregnant. My mom always told me she charted her temperature and cervical fluid, but I never put much thought into it before now. I kept track of my temperature, my cervical fluid, my cycles, my moods, etc. I even peed on sticks to see when my hormones were showing ovulation. I used helpful apps on my phone to keep track of all of this and view charts to note when ovulation is occurring.
First, I had no idea that you need a special thermometer to track your basal body temperature (BBT). Not only do you need to use this special tool, but it has an alarm to remind you to take your temperature at the same time every morning before you even wake up and get out of bed. That’s right…I had to take my temperature early if I woke up early and hold my morning urine if I hadn’t already taken my temperature. Mostly I stuck with the plan. That alarm became the bane of my morning existence. Worth it? I think so.
Secondly, I got ovulation and pregnancy urine strips to check my hormonal changes. I got the pack of 50 ovulation sticks and 20 pregnancy strips for about $15 on Amazon. They aren’t special but totally do the job. I got a little crazy with the ovulation strips and tested mornings and afternoons for my cycle days starting at day 12. It was early, but I don’t know when I ovulate normally. At some point the strips started showing faintly positive and got darker until it started to fade again. Then, a few days before my expected period I started testing…and that’s when things got weird. I got a faint positive before getting negative tests. Dang it! But I chose to try testing again just when my cycle was supposed to start. After a few days I got another positive. I didn’t believe it and did the test 3 more days all confirming a positive pregnancy.
Thirdly, I used the Flo and Ovia apps on my phone. These track everything from cycles to cervical fluids, moods to weights, and even my BBT with a chart and test results. I used Flo for a couple of years keeping track of my cycles and it worked well. A friend told me about Ovia and thought it wouldn’t hurt to use both. I liked them both but I think I’m used to using Flo. Below is a sample of a chart from Ovia.
I truly believe in the power of prayer. I’ve prayed for a long time asking the Lord to bless me with a child if it was His will. Sadly, it didn’t seem to be His will until recently. I would like to note though that I wasn’t the only one who prayed for a baby. Many family and friends prayed for us and with us over the years. But something truly special happened right before conception that I need to share.
One of my good friends we met in our bible study group came to a housewarming party I had August 25th. I hadn’t seen her in ages and was so excited she was able to join us. It was a great afternoon of swimming and grilling…well, eating for me because I didn’t grill anything personally. We were talking on her way to her car and I told her we were still trying.
Something came over my friend and she wanted to pray for me. I’m not going to say no. I need all of the help I can get. She laid hands on my womb and prayed the nicest prayer asking the Lord to bless us with a baby. Coincidence that I got pregnant? I don’t think so.
I believe the Lord brought Keto into my life, helped me find out about soy isoflavones and even the strength to continue tracking even when I was tired and wanted to stop. But this prayer. This prayer was so kind and loving. It was so thoughtful and selfless. I felt hope and rejuvenation to continue trying to have a child.
I believe that I have found the combination of success for my body and situation. Do you think this could work for you?
